( Latest at bottom of page - ' Thunderball Wednesday draw ' )

It starts here!

23 August 2000.

The operators of the National UK Lottery look as though they are about to change. As of today it has been announced by the controlling body that two bids, one from the existing operators Camelot and one from the "Peoples Lottery" backed by Sir. Richard Branson, have both been refused for various reasons to run the Lottery operation. However a period of one month has been given to the Peoples Lottery to change their bid to run the Lottery into one that is more acceptable to the controlling body. If this is done correctly it looks like the application by the Peoples Lottery will be successful. This means that the new operators will take over the running of the Lottery from October 2001.

The Peoples Lottery have also announced their intention of increasing the amount of balls used in the Lottery from the current 49 balls to 53 balls. One reason for this is that more balls are more likely to create a rollover thereby increasing the prize money when it happens. More here on what's going on, as it goes on, we'll keep you informed on the low-down.

29 August 2000.

Today the current operators of the Lottery Camelot, have applied for and been granted a court hearing to appeal against the decision taken by the controlling body. In particular to the fact that Camelot has not been granted a similar one month period of grace in which to change their bid to one which may be more acceptable as the 'Peoples Lottery' has been. This could take a month or so's time in order to resolve this new development, the outcome of which will be decided by this appeal court hearing. Interesting or what? Don't place your bets on the outcome of this one just yet. Watch this space for further developments.

21 September 2000.

The result of the court hearing is as follows. It has been decided that the controlling body operated unfairly by offering the one month extension only to the "Peoples Lottery" and not as well to the current operators Camelot. A similar time period should now be given to Camelot to change their bid to one which may be more acceptable also. Exactly what time period this will take to complete is not clear as the Peoples Lottery have by now had a month in which to change their bid while Camelot have been waiting for the result of this appeal. There is some speculation that the whole process could now possibly drag out well into next year. That could make time very short for either winner of the contract to complete the necessary alterations before the existing contract runs out in October 2001. We think it's a bit early to have a bet on the outcome just yet, so hang in there for a while.

05 October 2000.
The plot thickens. It emerges today that the chair person of the controlling body of the lottery has resigned, possibly due to pressure exerted both by media reports and possibly Camelot. A temporary chair person has been appointed for the time being. This seems to have put the whole future of everyone involved in the controlling body in doubt. More as it becomes clearer. - Repeat of last sentence above.

19 October 2000.

The lottery commission now has a new chair person. The commission has now granted Camelot a two month extension to run the lottery until December 2001 instead of the original expire date of September 2001, as it cannot now meet the deadline to grant the new licence because of all of the previous problems. This however poses another problem as the retailers whom operate the front line in the lottery are not happy about a possible changeover in the Christmas period, their busiest time of year, so we may be looking at a change over date of possibly March 2002. Whom ever eventually turns out to be granted the licence to run the lottery is not likely to be able to make any changes necessary until then. According to a spokesperson for the commission there is no danger of the lottery stopping over this period for whatever reason.

Personally we are going to keep an eye on our Horoscope page to see if future predictions give any clues as to the outcome of all this.
More when it happens.

25 October 2000.

The head of the Lottery commission has announced that a decision on whom will run the National Lottery will be made by mid December at the latest. Both applicants seem to be happy about this at this time. However Camelot have "hinted" that if they suspect unfair treatment, another court case could ensue. We suggest that everybody sends in their requests to Santa early this year.

15 November 2000.

Separately to all the above for the moment, as of today Camelot have now introduced an "Extra" lottery draw " Lottery Extra" which will run in parallel with the normal lottery draws each normal draw date and time. We're geared up to cope with this as you no doubt will have noticed. Wonder if they will throw in a new machine as well like they did a couple of weeks back? That surprised a few people that we know of. Keep watching lottery fans.

19 December 2000.

It has been announced as of today that Camelot have been awarded the franchise to run the National Lottery by a 4 to 1 majority from the Lottery commission. Watch out for possibly another court battle.
